I feel you give a good summary of the situation, and make an important point by pointing out that consciousness is not a phenomenon.

It is an odd thing that the mystics have spent thousands of years investigating consciousness and yet modern researchers totally ignore their findings. I suppose it's 'not invented here' syndrome. It renders modern consciousness studies painfully naive.

The key point, here I think, which you mentioned is the fact that there is an irreducible abyss between qualitative experience and quantitative measurements of brain processes.
